Ninja AG551EU Review: Grill & Air Fryer Guide

Short answer: the Ninja Foodi MAX AG551EU is a 2,460 W indoor grill with a 3.8-litre crisper basket, a large grill plate and a digital cooking probe. It can air fry, but it is not a conventional pull-out-drawer air fryer. Choose it when high-temperature grilling and temperature-guided meat cooking matter as much as air frying; choose a simpler basket model if compact size, low weight or maximum air-fry capacity per centimetre of counter space matters more.

Editorial disclosure: this is a specification-led review, not a hands-on test. We checked Ninja’s exact AG551EU instruction booklet and current official European and UK product information on 23 October 2026. We have not measured browning, noise, smoke, energy use or probe accuracy.

Confirm the model: AG551EU

The model code matters because “Foodi MAX” is used for very different Ninja appliances. This guide covers the European AG551EU Grill & Air Fryer. It has a hinged lid, removable splatter guard, grill plate, cooking pot, crisper basket and leave-in digital cooking probe. It does not pressure-cook, and it does not have the twin drawers found on Ninja Dual Zone models.

AG551EUCP is the copper-colour edition of the same AG551 platform. The core cooking system and capacities are not a reason to maintain a separate buying decision; colour and the exact bundle are the details to verify. The UK equivalent is commonly labelled AG551UK. Use the full code on the appliance rating label when ordering parts or support.

Why do listings say both 5.7 L and 3.8 L?

The numbers describe different removable parts. The 3.8-litre crisper basket is the relevant capacity when you use Air Fry. Some regional material describes the larger cooking pot underneath as 5.7 litres, while current European product pages foreground the 3.8-litre cooking capacity. Neither figure tells you how much food can brown in one layer.

For buying purposes, treat this as a 3.8-litre air fryer with a wide grill surface, not as a 5.7-litre drawer fryer. The grill plate’s roughly 740 cm² area is the more useful number for steaks, burgers, chicken breasts and vegetables. Our air-fryer capacity guide explains why litres and usable surface area answer different questions.

What makes the AG551EU different?

Most basket air fryers circulate hot air around food in a perforated basket. The AG551EU adds a heavy grill plate below a top heating system and uses Ninja’s Cyclonic Air system for high-temperature grilling. With the lid closed, it can create grill contact marks while hot air cooks the exposed surfaces. That makes it closer to an indoor grill that also air fries than to a standard air fryer with a token grill preset.

The trade-off is physical. At about 10.18 kg, it is substantial, and the hinged lid needs clear space above and behind it. You also have more parts to handle: cooking pot, grill plate or crisper basket, splatter guard and—when used—the probe. Measure the full counter footprint and lid-opening space before buying.

Digital cooking probe: useful, but not automatic perfection

The probe monitors internal temperature while fresh or thawed meat or fish cooks. You can choose a food type and preferred finish with Preset, or select a target internal temperature manually. Ninja says the probe should be inserted sideways into the thickest part of the protein, avoiding bone, fat and the cooking surface.

The system removes repeated lid-opening and gives a target-based stopping point, but it cannot correct poor probe placement or guarantee food safety by itself. Thin pieces may be difficult to probe accurately. The official FAQ says not to use the probe with frozen meat. Verify safe internal temperatures for the specific food and local guidance, and allow for carry-over cooking during the rest period.

The six cooking functions

Function Documented range or control Best fit
Grill LO 200°C, MED 230°C, HI 250°C, MAX 260°C Meat, fish, halloumi and vegetables that benefit from direct plate contact
Air Fry 150–240°C Chips, breaded food and small pieces needing circulating heat
Roast 120–220°C Meat and vegetables in the cooking pot
Bake 120–210°C Small bakes in suitable heat-safe cookware
Reheat 130–210°C Leftovers that should regain a dry or crisp surface
Dehydrate 40–90°C Thin, evenly prepared fruit, vegetables or jerky using a safe method

These controls show what the appliance can be set to; they do not prove that every food will cook faster or more evenly than in another model. Load depth, starting temperature, food thickness and recipe technique still determine the result.

Preheating and cooking workflow

Preheating is built into the normal workflow. After a function, temperature and time are selected, the display shows progress before prompting you to add food. Ninja allows preheat to be skipped with the PREHEAT button, but its official guidance does not recommend skipping it for Grill. A hot plate is part of how contact searing begins promptly.

  1. Fit the cooking pot and the correct insert: grill plate for Grill or crisper basket for Air Fry.
  2. Make sure the removable splatter guard is clean and fitted under the lid.
  3. Select the function, temperature and time, or configure the probe controls for suitable food.
  4. Let the preheat cycle finish unless a model-specific recipe directs otherwise.
  5. Add food when prompted, keeping hands clear of the hot plate and probe cable.
  6. Check doneness rather than treating a preset or online timing chart as a guarantee.

Air Fry loads may need shaking or turning, particularly when food overlaps. Grill mode is designed to cook without routine flipping, but thickness and contact still matter. Start with the exact instruction booklet or Ninja recipe guide, then record the time that works for your food and portion size.

Cleaning and smoke control

The splatter guard sits below the lid and helps keep grease away from the heating element. Ninja says it must be installed when cooking. If it is missing or clogged, grease can build up and contribute to smoke. Allow the appliance to cool fully before removing it.

The cooking pot, grill plate, crisper basket, splatter guard and cleaning brush are dishwasher-safe according to the manual; the digital probe is not. Soaking stuck residue before using the supplied scraper or a soft brush is kinder to the ceramic non-stick surfaces than metal tools or abrasive pads. Never immerse the powered base.

Fatty food can still smoke. Trim excess fat where appropriate, empty cooled grease between batches and clean the splatter guard regularly. If smoke is persistent, stop cooking safely and inspect for residue rather than assuming it is normal. See our detailed guide to air-fryer smoke causes.

Who should buy the AG551EU?

  • Good fit: households that will genuinely use indoor grilling and the leave-in probe.
  • Good fit: cooks who value a wide grill plate more than a deep, high-volume basket.
  • Possible fit: families of up to six when the meal suits the grill surface; headcount alone does not guarantee capacity.
  • Less suitable: buyers mainly wanting a compact air fryer for chips and reheating.
  • Less suitable: kitchens without permanent counter space or safe clearance for the hinged lid.
  • Check carefully: anyone expecting pressure cooking, two independent zones or a 5.7-litre air-fry basket—this model has none of those.

AG551EU buying checklist

  • Confirm the rating label says AG551EU or the intended regional equivalent.
  • Check that the grill plate, cooking pot, 3.8 L crisper basket, splatter guard, probe and cleaning brush are present.
  • Inspect ceramic coatings for deep scratches, chips or exposed metal on a used unit.
  • Measure space for the 39 × 41 cm body, ventilation and the open lid.
  • Check plug, voltage, guarantee and parts support for the country where it will be used.
  • If a listing says “5.7 L,” confirm which part that number describes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ninja AG551EU a 5.7-litre air fryer?

No. The air-fry crisper basket is 3.8 litres. The larger number used by some regional listings refers to the cooking pot, not the perforated basket used for Air Fry.

Does it pressure cook?

No. The AG551EU is a grill and air fryer. Do not confuse it with Ninja OP-series Foodi pressure multi-cookers.

Can the digital probe be used with frozen meat?

Ninja’s official FAQ says no. Use it with fresh or fully thawed meat, position it in the thickest part and independently check safe doneness.

Do you need to flip food on Grill?

Ninja markets the grill system as not requiring flipping for many foods, but food shape and contact vary. Inspect doneness and follow the exact recipe rather than treating “no flip” as universal.

Are the removable parts dishwasher-safe?

Ninja lists the cooking pot, grill plate, crisper basket, splatter guard and cleaning brush as dishwasher-safe. The probe and main unit must not go in the dishwasher.

Is AG551EUCP a different cooking model?

It is the copper-colour edition of the AG551EU platform. Verify bundle contents and regional support, but do not expect a different air-fry capacity or cooking system solely because of the CP suffix.

Verdict

The AG551EU makes sense when “grill” is a real requirement. Its 740 cm² plate, 260°C Grill MAX setting and leave-in probe give it a distinct job that a typical drawer air fryer does not perform. Air Fry is a useful second role, but its 3.8-litre basket is modest beside modern family-size dual-drawer machines.

Buy it for a recurring need to grill indoors and monitor thicker proteins—not because an ambiguous 5.7-litre listing makes it look like a large basket fryer. If air frying is the main job, compare the 3.8-litre basket and 10.18 kg appliance against a simpler model before paying for the grill hardware.
