Calculate your real air fryer running cost: enter rated wattage, total minutes including preheat and batches, weekly use, and the per-kWh rate from your electricity bill. The result shows cost per use, week, month and year. Optional oven fields compare the same meal.
Air fryer running cost calculator
This is a rated-power estimate. Thermostat cycling can lower measured energy; preheating, extra batches and other appliances can raise the total session cost.
Formula used by the calculator
The US Department of Energy recommends the same basic wattage-times-hours method for estimating appliance energy use. Weekly, monthly and yearly totals simply multiply the cost per use. The calculator uses 52 weeks per year and divides the annual result by 12 for an average month.
Where to find the correct inputs
Wattage
Use the rating plate, manual or regional manufacturer specification for the exact model. Do not copy a figure from a similar capacity sold in another voltage market.
Total minutes
Include preheat and every back-to-back batch. If you cook fries for 20 minutes twice, enter 40 minutes, not 20. If the appliance remains off between stages, count only actual powered time.
Electricity price
Use the unit rate per kWh on your bill. On time-of-use tariffs, enter the rate that applies when you cook. Fixed monthly network or account charges normally do not change because of one extra kWh, so they should not be added to the marginal cooking rate unless your bill explicitly makes them usage-dependent.
Comparison appliance
Use total oven or toaster-oven rated power and full session time for the same quantity of food. Include preheat. A fair comparison is one completed meal versus the same completed meal.
Why the estimate can be higher than a meter reading
The calculator assumes the appliance draws rated power for the whole selected time. Once hot, most air fryers cycle the heating element while the fan and electronics continue at a lower draw. Actual energy can therefore be below the estimate.
But the estimate can also miss energy when:
- preheat was excluded;
- more batches were needed than planned;
- food had to be recooked;
- another appliance cooked the rest of the meal;
- standby or keep-warm ran for a long period.
Air fryer vs oven: read the comparison correctly
If the calculator says the air fryer uses less, that conclusion applies only to the entered wattage and time. It is strongest when both appliances handle the same food quantity and deliver a comparable result.
Air fryer often wins
Small load, one batch, little preheat and a cold full-size oven as the alternative.
Oven can win
Large family load, several air-fryer batches, broad trays or an oven already hot for another dish.
How to make the result more accurate
- Run the normal meal, including preheat and every batch.
- Measure actual kWh with a correctly rated plug-in meter if safe and compatible.
- Repeat at least three times and average the results.
- Replace the calculator’s rated-power estimate with the measured kWh.
- Multiply by the exact tariff for the cooking period.
Reduce running cost sensibly
- Match appliance size to the load.
- Avoid a long automatic preheat when the manual and recipe do not require it.
- Prepare ingredients before turning the appliance on.
- Cook enough food to be useful without crowding and extending the cycle.
- Minimize unnecessary door or drawer opening.
- Keep airflow paths and temperature sensors clean as instructed.
- Use residual oven capacity when the oven is already hot for another dish.

The bottom line
Running cost is power multiplied by time and tariff. Enter the complete session, not a single batch, and compare equal meals. The calculator gives a transparent maximum-style estimate; a properly rated energy meter can refine it for your appliance.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate air fryer running cost?
Multiply watts divided by 1,000 by cooking hours, then multiply the kWh result by your electricity price per kWh. The calculator also multiplies that cost by weekly use.
Where do I find my electricity price?
Use the per-kWh unit rate on your bill. Include taxes or variable charges only if they change with each extra kWh; fixed monthly charges do not change the marginal cost of one cooking session.
Why is the result called a maximum estimate?
The calculation assumes the heater draws the full rated wattage for the complete time. In practice, thermostatic cycling often lowers consumption, while preheating or extra batches can raise total session energy.
Can I compare an air fryer with an oven?
Yes. Enter the oven’s rated power and total cooking time, including preheat. The comparison is most meaningful when both appliances cook the same amount of food to the same result.
Does standby power matter?
For most cooking comparisons it is small relative to heating, but a permanently illuminated or connected appliance may consume some standby energy. A plug-in meter can measure it over several days.
Will a lower-watt air fryer always cost less?
No. A lower-power model that runs much longer or needs extra batches can use more total kWh. Compare energy per completed meal, not wattage alone.
