Quick answer: You can air-fry most foods that tolerate dry oven heat and use compact oven-safe metal, ceramic, silicone or clearly labeled heat-safe glass when it fits without blocking airflow. Keep ordinary plastic, sealed containers, loose paper, excessive liquid and anything that can touch the heating element out.
The useful test is not whether an item fits through the drawer. Ask four questions: Is it rated for the cooking temperature? Can hot air circulate around it? Can it stay securely below the heating element? Will grease, steam or expansion create a hazard?
This guide covers both food and cookware. For material-by-material temperature limits and thermal-shock advice, see the dedicated air-fryer-safe containers and utensils guide.
Usually suitable
Vegetables, potatoes, frozen snacks, meat, fish, reheated baked food and small oven-safe dishes that leave airflow space.
Suitable with conditions
Foil, parchment, silicone, glass and ceramic only when secured by food, temperature-rated and allowed by the manual.
Poor candidates
Very wet batter, large amounts of sauce, dry loose herbs, lightweight cheese slices and food packed so tightly that air cannot move.
Keep out
Ordinary plastic, paper towels, sealed cans, non-oven-safe glass, flammable packaging and liquid poured into a standard drawer.
How to decide whether something can go in an air fryer
- Check the manual first. Some brands prohibit foil or specify where it may sit. Oven-style and basket models can have different clearance and drip-tray rules.
- Confirm the temperature rating. Use cookware rated above the selected cooking temperature. “Microwave safe” or “dishwasher safe” does not automatically mean oven safe.
- Measure the usable space. Leave room around the container and above rising food. A pan that fills the drawer edge to edge turns the air fryer into a poorly ventilated mini oven.
- Secure lightweight material. Parchment and foil must be held down by enough food before the fan starts. Never preheat with an empty paper liner.
- Protect the coating. Avoid sharp edges and dragging metal dishes across a non-stick basket. Lower a container in level and use silicone-tipped tools.
- Control liquid and grease. A small oven-safe ramekin of sauce is different from pouring soup into the drawer. Keep liquids contained and respect the appliance’s grease capacity.
- Allow for expansion. Dough, cakes and sealed foods can rise or build pressure. Maintain heater clearance and never heat a closed can or sealed jar.
- Monitor the first attempt. Check that handles, paper edges and food have not shifted toward the element. Stop if you see smoke, warping or melting.
What is safe to put in an air fryer?
The manual and the item’s own heat rating remain decisive.
| Item | General answer | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Metal pan or stainless-steel bowl | Usually yes | Must fit, be oven safe and leave airflow space. |
| Oven-safe ceramic | Usually yes | No cracks or decorative parts not rated for heat. |
| Heat-safe glass | Sometimes | Must be explicitly oven safe; avoid sudden temperature changes. |
| Silicone mold | Usually yes | Use a reputable temperature-rated product with enough support underneath. |
| Aluminum foil | Model dependent | Keep below food, away from the heater and do not block all perforations. |
| Perforated parchment liner | Model dependent | Add only with food on top; never let it fly loose. |
| Ordinary plastic or takeout container | No | It can soften, melt and contaminate food or the appliance. |
| Closed can or sealed jar | No | Pressure can build and the packaging may not be cooking safe. |
Foods that air fry particularly well
Foods with an exposed surface benefit most: vegetables, potato pieces, wings, breaded cutlets, fish fillets, tofu and reheated pizza. Dry the surface, use similar-size pieces and give them enough room. The appliance can also bake small cakes or casseroles in a fitted oven-safe pan, although the pan reduces direct airflow.
Can you put foil or parchment in an air fryer?
Only if the manual permits it. Keep foil or paper completely below the food and away from the heater. Do not line the entire drawer in a way that redirects grease toward the element or blocks every opening. Acidic food can react with bare aluminum, so glass, ceramic or suitable parchment may be a better choice for tomato or citrus-heavy dishes.
Why wet batter and loose ingredients cause trouble
Thin batter can drip before it sets, while powerful airflow can lift dry seasoning, grated cheese or small leafy pieces into the heater. Use a thicker coating, press crumbs firmly, remove excess flour and anchor lightweight toppings. If a recipe depends on a pool of oil or liquid, use another cooking method.
Stop and unplug: Stop if a liner lifts, a container cracks, plastic softens, liquid reaches electrical parts, smoke increases or food touches the heating element. Let everything cool before removal; thermal shock and hot grease can turn a minor problem into a burn or broken dish.
Five-question fit test
- Is the food or container explicitly safe at this temperature?
- Does the manual allow the material?
- Can air still move around and above it?
- Is every light item secured below the heater?
- Can the contents expand, splatter or release grease without overflowing?

Frequently asked questions
Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer?
Often, but only if the manual permits it. Keep foil secured under food, away from the heating element and positioned so it does not block all airflow or redirect grease dangerously.
Can you put glass in an air fryer?
Use only glass explicitly rated for oven temperatures and avoid thermal shock. Microwave-safe alone is not enough, and the dish must leave space for airflow.
Can you put a plate in an air fryer?
Only if the plate is clearly oven safe, fits without touching the heater and leaves airflow space. Decorative or unknown materials should not be used.
Can you put plastic in an air fryer?
Do not use ordinary plastic, takeout tubs or plastic wrap. Use only a product explicitly designed and temperature-rated for this type of oven cooking.
Can you cook raw meat in an air fryer?
Yes. Prevent cross-contamination, avoid overcrowding and verify the safe internal temperature in the thickest part with a food thermometer.
