Instant Vortex Plus 5.7L Review: Model Guide

Short answer: this guide covers the original European/UK Instant Vortex Plus 5.7L single-basket air fryer—the stainless-front model without a viewing window or OdourErase filter. Its official manual identifies it as “Vortex Plus 6” and documents a 5.7-litre basket, six cooking programs, 1,450–1,700W rating and 220–240V supply.

This is a specification-led guide based on Instant Brands’ official product manual and support material. We have not claimed hands-on testing.

Identify the correct Vortex Plus first

“Vortex Plus” is used for several appliances that look similar in search results but have different baskets, trays, electrical ratings and replacement parts. The model on this page has a solid stainless-steel front, a removable black basket and no ClearCook window. Instant’s manual calls the 5.7L version Vortex Plus 6.

Check the rating label on the bottom near the power lead before buying accessories or following a guide. A 5.7L ClearCook model has a viewing window; the ClearCook with OdourErase adds a filter housing. Instant’s own replacement-parts page says the newer ClearCook grill insert is not compatible with the non-ClearCook Vortex Plus 5.7L.

Instant Vortex Plus 5.7L specifications

Specification Original 5.7L Vortex Plus Why it matters
Manual model name Vortex Plus 6 Use the rating label and regional manual, not the family name alone.
Capacity 5.7 litres A single basket; usable surface area matters more than headline litres for crisping.
Electrical rating 1,450–1,700W; 220–240V, 50–60Hz This is the European/UK electrical specification, not the 120V U.S. rating.
Programs Air Fry, Roast, Grill, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate Six documented modes with different time and temperature limits.
Official dimensions 37.9 × 31.4 × 32.6cm (D × W × H) Leave additional ventilation space around the body.
Official weight 5.65kg Manageable, but large enough to merit a regular counter position.
Viewing window No Remove the basket to check food; cooking pauses and resumes automatically.
Odour filter No Do not buy filters or filter housings intended for the OdourErase variant.

The manual requires at least 13cm of free space above, behind and beside the appliance. Do not place it on a hob, under a low shelf that blocks the top vent, or against combustible material.

Six programs and their actual limits

Program Documented range Workflow note
Air Fry 82–205°C; 1 minute–1 hour Preheats and can show a Turn Food prompt.
Roast 82–205°C; 1 minute–1 hour Preheats and can show a Turn Food prompt.
Grill 205°C fixed; 1–40 minutes Temperature is not adjustable.
Bake 82–205°C; 1 minute–1 hour Use oven-safe cookware that fits without blocking airflow.
Reheat 49–182°C; 1 minute–1 hour Starts counting down without a preheat stage.
Dehydrate 35–79°C; 1–72 hours Low-temperature, long-duration mode; no preheat stage.

The presets are starting points, not automatic food-detection programs. Time depends on load, thickness, moisture and starting temperature. The appliance remembers saved time and temperature changes for each program; holding the relevant program key restores its factory setting, while holding the dial resets all programs.

How the preheat and turn prompts work

Air Fry, Roast, Grill and Bake use a preheat stage. Wait for the Add Food message before loading the basket when you want the manual’s intended workflow. Reheat and Dehydrate begin counting down immediately.

The Turn Food message applies to Air Fry and Roast. Pulling out the basket pauses cooking; reinserting it resumes the program. If turning is unnecessary, the program resumes automatically after a short pause. The prompt is a reminder, not proof that the centre of thick food is cooked safely.

What 5.7 litres means in practice

A 5.7L basket can suit two to four portions when food can be spread in a reasonably open layer. It is less convincing for a large batch of breaded pieces piled deeply, because circulating air needs access to the surface. For crisping, basket-floor area and load depth matter more than the litre figure.

The basket can hold a small whole chicken only if it fits below the heating area with room for air to circulate. Measure the food rather than assuming every chicken of a stated weight will fit. For household sizing, see our air-fryer capacity guide for a family of four.

Original model versus ClearCook versions

  • Original Vortex Plus 5.7L: solid front, no window, no filter housing; covered by this guide.
  • Vortex Plus with ClearCook 5.7L: viewing window and internal light; UK model AFB6132BK on the current official page.
  • ClearCook with OdourErase 5.7L: viewing window plus replaceable odour filters; UK model AFB6112SS.
  • U.S. 6QT ClearCook variants: 120V regional products with their own SKUs and electrical specifications.

If you are comparing the newer North American versions, use our Instant Vortex Plus 6QT ClearCook comparison. Do not import a 120V appliance for use on a 220–240V supply, and do not assume baskets or trays transfer between regional variants.

Cleaning: the basket is not machine-washable

The old version of this review described the removable parts as dishwasher-safe. That is not what the official manual says for this model. It instructs owners to clean the basket with warm water, dish soap and a sponge or cloth, and explicitly says do not immerse or machine-wash the basket.

  1. Unplug the appliance and let it cool to room temperature.
  2. Wipe the basket with warm soapy water, removing all grease and food debris without immersing it.
  3. Wash the non-stick cooking tray by hand with a soft cloth or sponge; avoid metal utensils and scouring pads.
  4. Wipe the cooking chamber and heating coil with a damp soft cloth as needed.
  5. Let every surface dry fully before reassembly or storage.

Grease around the heating element can cause smoke or fire. Our air-fryer cleaning guide explains the safe general technique, but the manufacturer’s instructions for this model take priority.

First use, smells and smoke

The manual recommends an empty test run at 205°C before the first cook. A temporary manufacturing smell can occur during the first few uses. Ventilate the room and stop using the appliance if the smell is electrical, accompanied by visible damage or does not improve. See our plastic or burning-smell guide for warning signs.

Black smoke requires immediate action: cancel the program, unplug the appliance and let it cool before inspecting and cleaning it. White smoke can come from fatty food, moisture or residue. Never pour oil or water into the cooking chamber, and do not spray oil directly toward the heating element.

Used-buying and replacement-part checklist

  • Confirm “Vortex Plus 6” or the exact regional model information on the rating label.
  • Check for the original basket and correctly fitting cooking tray.
  • Reject a basket with peeling coating, deep scratches, warping or a loose handle.
  • Inspect the power lead, plug and basket-detection fit.
  • Run a short program to confirm the fan, heater, display and basket switch work.
  • Check that E1 or E2 error codes do not appear; the manual assigns these to temperature-sensor faults requiring service.
  • Match replacement parts to the non-ClearCook 5.7L version—appearance alone is not enough.
  • Verify local voltage and plug type before buying across borders.

Who should buy it?

Good fit: someone wanting a straightforward single-basket air fryer with a broad 35–205°C operating range, saved program settings and a useful long-duration dehydrating mode.

Less suitable: buyers who want to watch food through a window, need two independent cooking zones, expect app control or want a basket the manufacturer approves for machine washing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the original Vortex Plus 5.7L have ClearCook?

No. The model covered here has a solid front. ClearCook and ClearCook with OdourErase are later, distinct variants.

How powerful is it?

The official European/UK manual gives a range of 1,450–1,700W on a 220–240V, 50–60Hz supply.

Is the basket dishwasher-safe?

No. The manual says not to immerse or machine-wash the basket. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth.

What is the maximum temperature?

Air Fry, Roast and Bake can be set up to 205°C. Grill uses a fixed 205°C setting. Reheat and Dehydrate have lower maximums.

Does every program preheat?

No. Air Fry, Roast, Grill and Bake preheat. Reheat and Dehydrate start counting down immediately.

Verdict

The original Instant Vortex Plus 5.7L remains a capable single-basket design when you want six genuinely distinct programs and do not need a viewing window. Its strengths are the wide temperature range, simple dial controls and long dehydrating cycle. Its limitations are equally clear: one cooking zone, hand-cleaning for the basket and confusingly similar newer variants.

Buy by the rating label, not by the words “Vortex Plus” alone.
